The Health Careers Club is designed to inform students who may be interested in a career in the medical field, whether it is as a physician or nurse, or in dentistry or veterinary medicine. The group organizes and participates in talks with area professionals in lectures and also performs career shadowing. This helps students fully understand the concepts and opportunities available to them in the health careers professions and learn how to integrate that interest into their college planning and selection. Additionally, the Club organizes guest speakers at MMI for the student body, such as Dr. Robert Yamulla who discussed the Swine Flu epidemic with our students.
The Club conducted a stuffed animal drive in the Fall of 2009 to receive donations for sick children at a local children’s hospital. Under advisor Sharon Weaver and President Michelle Reck, the club was excited for this opportunity to give back to the children’s hospital for all they do for the area’s sick children. The Stuffed Animal Drive also gave the members of the club the chance to make a small difference in health care.
Members of the Health Careers Club include (Left to Right): Ashley Acri, Julia Dasher, Megan Beggs, Maggie Rychlik, Brone Lobichusky (rear), Erin Kislan (front), Tinka Diener, and Michelle Reck.
The Club also sponsored a lecture by Dr. John Degenhart on October 8. While at MMI, Dr. Degenhart discussed the necessity of having priorities and goals in life and that the decision to become a health professional is one that someone must take seriously. He also talked about his experiences with patients and what it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He told the students about the education required to become a chiropractor and left the students with the challenge to be the best they can be and work hard to achieve their goals.
The Club visited the McCann School of Business and Technology on Monday, November 16 to tour the facility and participate in hands on learning activities in the Medical and Massage Therapy programs. Students in the club participated in a hand on learning demonstration of a simulated arm for venipunctures in which each student was allowed to simulate skills used by phlebotomists, nurses, and physicians working in healthcare. The students also observed a Medical Assisting Clinical class learning to calculate medication dosages. Guide for the tour was Mr. Bill Koziol, RN, Director of the Medical Assistant program at McCann School of Business and Technology. Health Career Club members also participated in a lecture and demonstration by the Massage Therapy students at McCann. Howard Dry, Instructor of Massage Therapy, along with several massage therapy students explained different massage types, reflexology, aromatherapy, and how the massage therapist works with the members of the healthcare team to offer holistic health care for patients. Demonstrations were provided by the Massage therapy students on the various massage techniques as well as different oils used in aromatherapy.
