MATHCOUNTS® is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
After several months of coaching, participating schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500 written and oral competitions held nationwide and in U.S. schools overseas. Winners at the local level proceed to state competitions, where the top four Mathletes® and top coach earn the right to represent their state or territory at the national level. At all levels, MATHCOUNTS challenges students' math skills, develops their self-confidence, and rewards them for their achievements. Student participants (who are called "mathletes”) compete in both written and oral matches on various math topics, including statistics, geometry, linear algebra, and probability.
The 2008-09 MATHCOUNTS Team had the strongest finish in recent years, taking second place at the regional competition held at Luzerne County Community College Educational Conference Center in Nanticoke. The team of mid school students competed against 13 other schools from throughout the region in the team portion of the competition. In the individual competition, a total of 95 students from the region competed for individual honors. MMI team members who earned the second place finish in the team competition were Brianna Dzurishin, George Gorski, Casey McCoy, and Matthew Yurish. In the individual competition, three MMI students placed in the top 10 in the countdown round. They were Casey McCoy, George Gorski, and Matthew Yurish.
