President - William A. Shergalis, '58, BS, MS, Ph.D PDF Print E-mail

Dr. William A. Shergalis was named the ninth President in MMI history in the summer of 2001.  A native of Hazleton, Dr. Shergalis is also a 1958 Graduate of MMI and was the Commencement Speaker in 1983.  He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962, a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from the Drexel University in 1964, and received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Temple University in 1968.

On the administrative front, Dr. Shergalis served as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at King’s College from 1990-2001.  He had additional experience as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ohio Dominican College from 1985-1990, the Academic Dean (1981-85) and Acting President (1984) at Cardinal Newman College, and the Chairman of the Science Group at Widener University from 1978-1981.  No stranger to collegiate education, Dr. Shergalis was a professor of chemistry at Temple, Widener, Cardinal Newman, and King’s for a combined period of 22 years.

Upon returning to Northeastern Pennsylvania from Columbus, Ohio in 1990, Dr. Shergalis reconnected to his MMI roots.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors for 10 years and served three years as the President of the Board.  Dr. Shergalis also was a member of the Board of Directors for the Sophia Coxe Charitable Trust from 1993-2001.

Dr. Shergalis has also made a commitment throughout his career to stay active professionally through various organizations.  He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center, St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, the Higher Education Council of St. Louis, and the University City Science Center (Widener Delegate).

In terms of community service and activities, Dr. Shergalis is a longtime member of St. Jude’s Church in Mountain Top, having served on the Worship Committee, as a Lector, and as a Eucharistic Minister. He was the Stewardship Committee Chairman and Lector at St. Matthew Church in Gahanna, Ohio.  Dr. Shergalis and his wife, Miki, currently reside in Mountain Top.  They have two children, Jesseca and Michael, and two grandsons, Justin and Ryan.
