As I was growing up in the Hazleton area, everybody knew that if you wanted to go to a good college, you went to MMI first.

When I was in eighth grade, my parents let me choose which high school I would attend. They told me that if I was thinking about going to college, I should really consider going to MMI.

My parents were of modest means. They worked hard and earned every penny they made. I knew that sending me to MMI would be a sacrifice for them. Yet it was a sacrifice they were willing to make… they were buying educational insurance. My parents believed studying at MMI would give me a tremendous head start in the future. So, I chose MMI.

At that time, there was no financial assistance available to help families as there is today, but my parents were allowed to meet the tuition with a monthly payment plan.

This helped me, and a few years later, it helped my brother who followed me to MMI.

I found the curriculum to be challenging, but not impossible. I was able to keep up with my studies and participate in a number of extracurricular activities, including basketball and baseball. I also made many friendships, which remain strong to today.

MMI provided me a tremendous opportunity. I knew my parents were making a sacrifice, so I worked hard and did my best to reward their investment.

After graduating from MMI, I went to the University of Pennsylvania on a full scholarship. I then received my doctorate degree in chemistry and became a college professor and later, a college administrator.

Now, as president of MMI Preparatory School, I’m back at my alma mater.

In some ways, MMI has vastly changed. The campus is much larger and more comfortable. Technology inside our classrooms is far beyond what we dreamed possible when I attended classes here. Students have more options in their courses and extracurricular activities.

But, in some ways, things haven’t changed that much at all. I still see a traditional college preparatory curriculum that prepares students for life after high school. I see a faculty that not only pushes young men and women to achieve, but also helps them along the way. I see students who befriend and encourage each other because they share common goals.

Those things – the very core of MMI – remain intact.

At MMI, education is valued. Our classes are small and our campus provides a safe, college-like atmosphere where students are treated as individuals and receive the attention they need, often on a one-to-one basis.

As you browse this web site, you’ll read what our parents and students have to say in their own words. You’ll see real examples of how financial aid packages are helping families afford an MMI education. And you’ll learn why the people who know us best say MMI Prep is a special place.

But the best way to discover MMI is to see it for yourself. I personally invite you to come to our campus, to spend the day with us, and experience MMI Prep firsthand.

I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

William A. Shergalis, Ph.D., ’58
