The following colleges/universities have opportunities available for students to visit their campuses:

  • Franklin Pierce--On July 7, 2007, Franklin Pierce College became Franklin Pierce University.  They would like to make you aware of this change and let you know that they offer guided tours of their campus.  Tours are available Monday-Saturday.  Tours start at 9:00 A.M., 10:00 A.M., 11:00 A.M., 12:00 Noon, 1:00 P.M., and 2:00 P.M.  To schedule a visit, call them at (800) 437-0048Monday-Friday, 8:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M. 

Scholarship Opportunities 

  • YoungARTS--YoungARTS, a program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, will be offering cash and scholarship awards for qualified applicants.  Anyone that is 17 or 18 years old is elgible.  There is an early registration deadline of June 16, 2008 with a final deadline of October 1, 2008.  There is a deadline of November 3, 2008 for getting your audition and/or portfolio turned into them.  For more information, visit www.youngarts.org or call (800) 970-ARTS.    
  • PHEAA--If you are interested in applying for the New Economy Technology Scholarship, you can download an application at www.pheaa.org.  These scholarshps provide between $1,000-$3,000 per year.  The application deadline is December 31, 2008.
  • Platt Caddie Scholarship--Scholarships are available to those who have caddied for at least one year at a member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia.  Awards currently range from $200-$7,000 per year and are determined on a financial need basis.  For any additional information about this award, visit their Website at www.plattcaddiescholarship.org

  • Johnson & Wales University--You can now earn the Chancellor's Scholarship for high academic achievers; renewable scholarships of $7,500 to full tuition.  There are four locations across the country.  For more information, call (800) DIAL-JWU or visit www.jwu.edu
  • Savannah College of Art and Design--SCAD wants you to know that they offer scholarships to students that have applied and been accepted to attend their school.  Qualifying students should demonstrate strong leadership skills, have between a 3.0 and 4.0 GPA, and excel artistically.  For more information about the school and/or the scholarships available, visit their Website at www.scad.edu/scholarships
  • Dartmouth College--Dartmouth has announced their new Financial Aid Initiative.  There are four key elements to this new initiative.  The first is that tuition for all students who come from families with annual incomes below $75,000 will be FREE.  Second, loans will be replaced with scholarships.  Third, there will be need-blind admissions for international students.  The fourth element states that Dartmouth will offer additional scholarships of $2,950 to allow financial aid recipients to take advantage of research or internship opportunities in their junior year.  If you have any questions about this Initiative, call Dartmouth at (603) 646-2875.  You may also e-mail them at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .    
  • Navy ROTC--The Navy ROTC Program is an opportunity to learn more about the Navy's comprehensive scholarship for college.  Students may apply for scholarships with no obligation to join the Navy for their entire freshman year of college.  Any student that meets the Navy's minimum SAT or ACT scores is elgible to apply.  Those scores are: Critical Reading-530, Math-520, English-22, and Math-22.  Navy ROTC is offered at many fine colleges, including most of the Ivy League colleges.  Students who are interested in applying should start their applications on the Navy ROTC Website.  The address is www.nrotc.navy.mil.  The Website will open on March 15, 2008 for juniors.

Summer and Academic Year Opportunities

  • Hazleteens--There are numerous volunteer opportunities with the Hazleteens coming up.  If you would like to receive an information packet, stop by the front office.  Get out and lend a hand. 
  • Harvard Summer School--Harvard is again hosting their Secondary School Program.  Some of the courses you can participate in are Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, History, Music, and the Visual Arts.  There are many others to choose from.  Some of the classes begin on Monday, June 23, 2008.  Typical costs for the program run about $9,000 for the eight-week courses or about $4,500 for one short session.  There is a nonrefundable $50 admission fee that must be included in your application.  The deadline for submission is May 15, 2008.  Please visit their Website for more information.  The address is www.ssp.harvard.edu.
  • Oxford University--Oxford University, in England, will be holding their 25th Annual Oxford Advanced Studies Program from July 1-July 25, 2008.  There will be courses available in The Arts, English Literature, History, Politics, Science, and numerous other courses of study.  The course fee for a single college room with daily breakfasts and lunches from Monday-Thursday, plus teaching in two academic subjects, will be $8,950.  If students wish to take a third class, there will be an additional $950 charge.  Living expenses, such as food and activities, should run about $250 per week.  You will need to make sure you have a Visa and a Passport.  The deadline to register for this program is May 15, 2008.  There will be a registration fee of $400 payable with the application, refundable only if the student is not accepted.  Stop by the front office for an application. 
  • Talented Youth--Talented Youth, sponsored by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, will be conducting its Summer Program 2008 from July 13-August 3, 2008.  This opportunity is available to all students in the 11th-12th Grades.  The cost of the program is around $3,080, plus travel expenses.  The deadline to register is May 15, 2008.  Stop by the front office for more information and/or a registration form.      
  • The Junior Statesmen Foundation--There will be opportunities offered at Georgetown, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford for any students in the 8th-11th Grades.  These students should have an interest in politics and current events.  You can attend a Presidential Nominating Convention Symposium or the Junior Statesmen Summer School.  The program costs vary depending on which program you are interested in.  Regardless of which you choose, there is a $50 deposit due.  For a 10% discount, get your applications in by February 28, 2008.  A 5% discount will be offered to anyone who gets their applications in by March 28, 2008.  All applications are due by May 16, 2008.
  • People to People--People to People is looking for nominees for its Leadership Program.  The program is open to students in the 6th-10th Grades.  If you would like to add your name to the list of nominees, stop by the front office.  The deadline to sign up is May 16, 2008 
  • Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley--JCC will be holding a one-week day camp the week of June 16-June 20, 2008.  The camp will run from 8:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. each day.  The fee for JCC members is $180 and the fee for non-members is $200.  The deadline to register is May 16, 2008.  Stop by the front office for a brochure and registration form.   
  • Boston University--Boston University will be holding the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists(PROMYS) from June 29-August 9, 2008.  They will be accepting approximately 65 students with an exceptionally strong interest in math.  PROMYS is a six-week residential program, with an approximate per-student cost of $2,500.  There is financial aid available.  To fill out an application, visit www.promys.org.  Applications will be accepted until May 30, 2008.
  • University of Virginia--4 Star Camps is back.  4 Star Camps is a great summer program that offers many courses to take part in.  There are programs for juniors and seniors, SAT/ACT prep courses, and athletic courses offered.  There are two deadlines for the program.  The first is May 1, 2008.  If you have your application in by this date, there is a $400 deposit required.  The second deadline is any day after May 1, 2008, but before June 1, 2008.  If you wait until this time, full payment is required with your application.  To find out all costs, visit their Website at www.4starcamps.com.   
  • Miss Pennsylvania/Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA--The Miss USA and Miss Teen USA Pageants are looking for individuals that would like to participate in this wonderful event.  Qualified candidates must never have been married or given birth.  They must also be between the ages of 14-19.  There are three categories girls will be judged in: Personal Interviews, Swimsuit, and Evening Gown.  There is no Performing Talent Competition.  In order to participate, you must stop by the office to pick up a form.  The form, along with a photo, must be received by the State Pageant Office by June 6, 2008.  Good luck to all those who enter. 
  • Elizabethtown College--Elizabethtown College will be holding the Elizabethtown College Music Camp (formerly the Lancaster County Music Camp) from July 13-July 19, 2008.  The cost of the camp will be $525 and includes all instruction, room, three meals daily, and insurance.  The deadline to register is June 15, 2008
  • Mount Holyoke College--Mount Holyoke College will be holding the SummerMath Program this Summer from June 29-July 26, 2008.  This four-week program is for students that want to see beyond high school math.  To apply and/or to get more information, visit their Website at www.mtholyoke.edu/proj/summermath or call (413) 538-2608
  • Northwestern University--The National High School Music Institute will be held at Northwestern University from June 29-August 1, 2008.  There will be eight different programs of study, opportunities for financial aid, and room and board available.  The cost for this program, which includes tuition, room and board, health insurance, and field trips, is $4,400.  There is a $50 non-refundable application fee.  See your Guidance Department or visit www.music.northwestern.edu/nhsmi.
  • Oxford--Oxford is offering their Oxford Advanced Studies Program.  It will take place July 1-July 25, 2008.  There will be many courses to choose from.  There will be a registration fee due of $400.  Course fees will be $8,950.  The price includes the courses, activities and visits, and board.  A supplement of $950 is charged when students enroll for a third class or an elective.  There has been no deadline given, but it is advised that you sign up as soon as possible.  For more information or for applications, visit Oxford's Website at www.oasp.ac.uk.
  • The Irish Way--The Irish Way is celebrating their 32nd Anniversary and are reaching out to as many people as possible.  The Irish Way is an opportunity to travel to Ireland for a four-week summer study program.  The program will run from July 6-August 1, 2008.  If you would like more information and/or to register, call them at (973) 605-1991 or visit their Website at www.iaci-usa.org.  They can also be found on MySpace and Facebook.

  • The Clarkson School--The Clarkson School announces their 2008 Young Scholars Summer Program.  The program is open to the Classes of 2009 and 2010.  Young Scholars are given a real-world problem to be analyzed from the perspectives of business, engineering, and ethics.  This year's program will be held on Clarkson University's campus from July 27-August 2, 2008.  The cost will be $850 and includes room, board, team building events, and activity fees.  As an incentive, students who participate in the program and are later accepted to Clarkson University, will receive a $4,000 scholarship.  Visit their Website at www.clarkson.edu/tcs.    
  • Pomfret School--Pomfret School and the Broken Bridge Review are again hosting the Broken Bridge Summer Arts Workshops for high schoolers in the 9th-12th Grades with an interest in poetry, writing, acting, drawing, and 3D assembly.  To learn more about this program, visit their Website at www.brokenbridge.us.  
  • Berklee College of Music--Berklee College of Music will be holding their Berklee Summer Programs.  They offer programs that range in length from two days to twelve weeks.  If you are interested in attending any of these programs, go to their Website for information regarding dates, costs, and any deadlines.  Their address is www.berklee.edu/summer
  • Johnson & Wales University--Johnson & Wales will be offering Summer Culinary Arts Programs this year.  For registration information and deadlines, see your Guidance Department.
  • Washington Workshops-Summer 2008--Washington Workshops is a three-week Washington Internship Experience.  See Mr. Scibilia for more information or call (800) 368-5688.
  • Action Quest--Action Quest and Lifeworks offer educational opportunities for teenagers, with a strong emphasis on building self-reliance and personal responsibility.  Lifeworks is the community service arm of Action Quest and will accept 170 students in 2008, including scholarship students.  Action Quest is run primarily aboard sailing vessels and offers leadership and water sports certification.  Lifeworks is mainly land-based and includes up to 100 hours of community service work.  If you are interested in receiving a full program brochure, see Mr. Scibilia or Rob in the front office.
  • Naval Academy Summer Seminar--The United States Naval Academy will be conducting its Naval Academy Summer Seminar again.  This is a great program for anyone considering a military career and even for those who are not.  Check out the poster hanging up in the school for more details and information. 
  • Kaplan--Kaplan will be holding Practice SATs at King's College starting on Thursday, June 26, 2008.  The tests will be offered through Thursday, August 7, 2008.  For test dates and times, or to reserve a spot in a class, call (800) KAP-TEST or visit www.kaptest.com/sat.

Contests and Competitions

  • Veterans of Foreign Wars--The VFW is sponsoring two essay contests.  The Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest is open to students in the 9th-12th Grades and the Patriots Pen Essay Contest is open to students in the 6th-8th Grades.  The prizes for the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest are scholarships and savings bonds will be awarded to winners of the Patriots Pen Essay Contest.  The deadline for both of these contests is November 1, 2008.  Stop by the front office for more information.
