College Open Houses

The following colleges/universities have opportunities available for students to visit their campuses:    

  • Pennsylvania College of Art and Design--PCAD will be holding several open houses.  There will be one on January 17, 2009, followed by one on March 21, 2009, and one on June 26, 2009.  Each one begins at 11:00 A.M. and runs until 2:30 P.M.  For more information, call their admissions office at (717) 396-7833.

  • Indiana University of Pennsylvania--IUP will be holding three "Decision Days".  They will take place on the following dates: February 16, 2009, April 10, 2009, and April 13, 2009. 
  • Anderson University--Anderson will be holding an All Access campus visit on February 26-27, 2009.  This is a 24-hour, overnight visit designed to immerse you in Anderson's exceptional academic programs and dynamic campus life.  You will also get the opportunity to attend a varsity basketball game during this visit.  There will also be a Saturday Trojan Preview on April 18, 2009 and a Sneak Peek @ AU.  The Sneak Peek will be held on January 19, 2009 and again on March 6, 2009.  For more information, visit www.andersonuniversity.edu

  • Big 33--PHEAA and Big 33 have partnered up to offer seniors in Pennsylvania and Ohio scholarships.  From November 3, 2008-February 6, 2009, seniors can register at www.big33.org for one of the scholarships they offer.  When you apply, be sure to fully complete the application, including the essay portion. 
  • Best Buy @ 15--Best Buy is sponsoring the Best Buy @ 15 Scholarship Program.  You can apply beginning January 6, 2009-February 15, 2009.  There will be 1,000 scholarships worth $1,500 each awarded.  Visit www.bestbuy.com/scholarships or www.at15.com to apply. 
  • Gates Millenium Scholars--The Gates Millenium Scholars Program would like to make you aware that they are offering scholarships for 1,000 students of African/American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander, and/or Hispanic descent.  You must also be an American citizen and have a GPA between 3.3 and 4.0.  Submit your applications online at www.gmsp.org.  The deadline to be registered is January 12, 2009
  • Fairleigh Dickinson University--Fairleigh Dickinson University is offering the Bergen Metropolitan Scholar Award to first-time, full-time freshmen.  These awards are renewable annually and are worth more than $108,000 over the course of four years at FDU's Metropolitan Campus.  To qualify, students should have at least a 3.5 GPA (a 90 or better), a minimum SAT score of 1300, and be a resident student enrolling at FDU's Metropolitan Campus.  See Mr. Scibilia for an application.  The deadline to get it back to FDU is January 15, 2009
  • McKelvey Foundation--The McKelvey Foundation is offering the McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship to all seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school.  The award is up to $10,000 per year for four years at any U S college.  Visit www.mckelveyfoundation.org to register.  The deadline is January 25, 2009.
  • Luzerne County Head Start--The Luzerne County Head Start Inc. is once again offering scholarships to this year's graduating seniors who are former Head Start students.  You can pick up applications in the front office beginning the week of November 9, 2008.  The deadline to return your application to Head Start is January 26, 2009
  • St. John's University--St. John's would like to make you aware of some of the scholarships they offer.  There is the Catholic Student Scholarship, the Ozanam Scholars Program, and the Women in Science Scholarship.  If you will be attending St. John's, it is advised that you check out these scholarships.  The deadline to apply for all of them is February 1, 2009.  Visit www.stjohns.edu for any and all information you need.
  • School of Visual Arts--The School of Visual Arts has scholarships available for all incoming freshmen and transfer students.  The deadline to submit any and all paperwork for incoming freshmen is February 1, 2009 and the deadline for all transfer students is March 1, 2009.  To get more information about the school and the opportunities available, visit www.sva.edu
  • Burger King--Burger King is pleased to announce their 2009 Burger King Scholars Program.  The Burger King Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses such as books and tuition.  Applications are available online from September 15, 2008-February 2, 2009.  The last day to submit applications is by the postmark deadline of February 2, 2009.  To apply, go to www.bk.com/scholars and follow the directions.
  • National Commission for Cooperative Education--The NCCE is the largest independently sponsored merit co-op scholarship in America and, along with 10 partner colleges and universities, will award 200 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each.  For more information and/or to apply, visit www.co-op.edu.  The deadline for submitting the application and essay is February 15, 2009.  Early submission is strongly encouraged.
  • AXA Achievement Community Scholarship--You may now begin applying for the AXA Achievement Community Scholarship online at www.axa-achievement.com.  There is up to $750,000 that will be awarded.  The deadline to apply is February 15, 2009

  • Fashion Institute of Technology--FIT would like to make you aware of their Presidential Scholars Program.  This honors program offers the opportunity to explore New York City, visit museums, and attend theatre, opera, dance, and music performances.  You will also be able to participate in stimulating colloquia and take advanced liberal arts classes.  For more information and/or to register, visit www.fitnyc.edu/honors.  The deadline to register is March 9, 2009
  • Allied Services-John Heinz Institute--The John Heinz Institute Auxiliary is again offering the Rose Brader Scholarship.  The Rose Brader Scholarship Fund is offering (1) $1,000 scholarship and (2) $500 scholarships to Luzerne County residents pursuing an education in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreation Therapy, or Speech Therapy.  To be elgible, the applicant must be a high school senior and a candidate for a Bachelor's or Master's Degree or post-graduate studies.  Stop by the front office to pick up an application.  The deadline to return them to John Heinz is March 17, 2008.  Mail them to: The John Heinz Institute Auxiliary, Rose Brader Scholarship Committee, 150 Mundy Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702
  • PHEAA--PHEAA is anticipating continued funding of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program for the 2009-2010 academic year.  There are specific requirements and directions regarding the application process and all required documents must be submitted at the same time.  Stop by the front office or visit www.pheaa.org for more information.  The application deadline is April 1, 2009.  This deadline is an arrival deadline. 
  • Anderson University--Anderson has many scholarship competitions that you can enter for a chance at scholarships.  The competitions began in October and continue through March and April.  Visit www.andersonuniversity.edu for all entry and other information.
  • Kettering University--Kettering has just released $6 million in scholarship funds.  If you plan to major in Engineering, Math, Science, or Business, visit www.admissions.kettering.edu to apply for FREE.  Kettering students can also earn as much as $65,000 through co-op employment.
  • Roy W. Piper Scholaraship--The Roy W.   • Fallen Officers Remembered--Fallen Officers Remembered will be offering a scholarship to one eligible senior.  It is open to any senior with an interest in pursuing a criminal justice career/education.  Stop by the front office to pick up an application if you would like to apply.
  • Platt Caddie Scholarship--Scholarships are available to those who have caddied for at least one year at a member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia.  Awards currently range from $200-$7,000 per year and are determined on a financial need basis.  For any additional information about this award, visit their Website at www.plattcaddiescholarship.org

  • Ohio Wesleyan University--Ohio Wesleyan University wants to let all seniors and their families know that they will be awarding at least 140 academic scholarships to 2009 graduates.  Among these, 25 will be Presidential Scholarships, 60 will be Trustee Scholarships, and 60 will be Faculty Scholarships.  The Presidential Scholarships are full-tuition awards of more than $33,000, Trustee Scholarships are three-fourths tuition awards of more than $24,000, and Faculty Scholarships are half-tuition awards of more than $20,000.  These awards will be offered to graduates with combined SAT critical reading and math scores of at least 1250 or ACT composite scores of 27 or higher.  For more information on the school and/or its scholarships, visit This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .   
  • Southeastern University--Starting this fall, Southeastern University will be offering entering freshmen new scholarships that will cover nearly half of tuition.  They will be offering Regent's Scholarships of $6,000 per year, President's Scholarships of $4,000 per year, Dean's Scholarships of $3,000 per year, and Southeastern Scholarships of $2,000 per year.  They will also be offering Travel Grants for students attending from states other than Florida.  This grant will be $1,000.  To contact the school, go to www.seuniversity.edu.

  • Savannah College of Art and Design--SCAD wants you to know that they offer scholarships to students that have applied and been accepted to attend their school.  Qualifying students should demonstrate strong leadership skills, have between a 3.0 and 4.0 GPA, and excel artistically.  For more information about the school and/or the scholarships available, visit their Website at www.scad.edu/scholarships
  • Dartmouth College--Dartmouth has announced their new Financial Aid Initiative.  There are four key elements to this new initiative.  The first is that tuition for all students who come from families with annual incomes below $75,000 will be FREE.  Second, loans will be replaced with scholarships.  Third, there will be need-blind admissions for international students.  The fourth element states that Dartmouth will offer additional scholarships of $2,950 to allow financial aid recipients to take advantage of research or internship opportunities in their junior year.  If you have any questions about this Initiative, call Dartmouth at (603) 646-2875.  You may also e-mail them at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .    
  • University of Dayton--The University of Dayton would like to make all seniors aware of the scholarship opportunities they have available.  They have Trustee's Merit, President's Merit, and Dean's Merit Scholarships as well as Father Chaminade Awards.  Scholarship values range from $20,000-$100,000 and last year, student's received nearly $44,000,000 in scholarships and grants.
  • Davis & Elkins College--Davis & Elkins would like to make you aware of a new scholarship they will be offering.  The scholarship is for $15,000 and is available to all students with a 3.8 GPA or higher.  After being accepted to the school, students' transcripts and test scores will be reviewed.  To apply, go to www.davisandelkins.edu

  • Navy ROTC--The Navy ROTC Program is an opportunity to learn more about the Navy's comprehensive scholarship for college.  Students may apply for scholarships with no obligation to join the Navy for their entire freshman year of college.  Any student that meets the Navy's minimum SAT or ACT scores is elgible to apply.  Those scores are: Critical Reading-530, Math-520, English-22, and Math-22.  Navy ROTC is offered at many fine colleges, including most of the Ivy League colleges.  Students who are interested in applying should start their applications on the Navy ROTC Website.  The address is www.nrotc.navy.mil

Summer and Academic Year Opportunities 

  • PHEAA--To recognize students who scored exceptionally well on the SAT or ACT during the 2007-2008 school year, a Certificate of Merit signed by the Governor and PHEAA's Chairman of the Board will be sent.  PHEAA would also like to make you aware of some important dates.  On January 1, 2009, you may begin completing the 2009-2010 FAFSA form.  The FAFSA filing deadline falls on May 1, 2009 for all applicants who plan to enroll in baccalaureate degree programs.  The final date of importance is August 1, 2009, which is the deadline for all new applicants.   
  • Mid-Year Exams--Mid-year exams will take place on the following dates: Wednesday, January 14, 2009-Friday, January 16, 2009.  Stay tuned for the exact schedule which will be posted soon. 
  • University of Scranton--The University of Scranton will conduct an on-campus Fiancial Aid Workshop for local accepted students.  The workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 from 7:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. in the DeNaples Center.  If needed, there is a snow day of Monday, January 26, 2009.  The hours for the snow day are the same.  If you plan to attend the University of Scranton, it is recommended you attend this informational night.

  • FAFSA Financial Aid Workshop--The FAFSA Financial Aid Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 in the MMI cafeteria.  It will begin at 6:30 P.M.  Parents, please try to attend, especially if you have questions about getting your child or children off to college.

  • Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre--Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre applications are available.  Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre is open to all students who will be entering their junior year in the fall of 2009.  There is a processing fee of $10 that is required with each application.  There is a counselor deadline of February 2, 2009 to ensure we get all of the applications to Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre in a timely manner. 
  • Widener University--Widener, along with the Philadelphia Section of the Society of Women Engineers, will be hosting a one-day Engineering Mini-Camp for girls in grades 9-12.  The camp will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 on Widener's Chester campus.  Enrollment is limited, so register as soon as possible.  For more information, visit www.widener.edu.

  • Camp Cadet--Camp Cadet will be open again this summer.  The program is open to anyone between the ages of 12 and 14 who is in good physical condition and lives in the area of Troop N.  The program will run from July 26, 2009-July 31, 2009.  You can pick up an application from the Guidance Dept.  The deadline to apply is March 31, 2009.  Call (570) 459-3857 or (570) 582-1089 for more information.
  • United States Military Academy--The U S Military Academy at West Point will host two sessions of the 34th Annual Summer Leaders Seminar in 2009.  The first session will run from May 30, 2009-June 5, 2009 and the second will run from June 6, 2009-June 12, 2009.  This program is open to juniors and will give them an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic, physical, military, and leadership-development programs at a service academy.  To apply, visit www.admissions.usma.edu, and make sure to do it before the deadline of April 1, 2009.  You will be notified by May 1, 2009 if you have been accepted.
  • Washington University in St. Louis--WUSTL will be holding the High School Summer Scholars Program, and there will be two sessions to choose from.  The first will be held from June 7, 2009-July 11, 2009 with a registration deadline of May 1, 2009 and the second session will be held from July 12, 2009-August 14, 2009 with a registration deadline of June 5, 2009.  To be eligible, you must be a current junior or sophomore, have an academic average of at least a B+, and have an SAT score of at least 1800.  The cost of the program will be $5,935 and there will be assistance available.  For more information and/or to request application materials, visit www.summerscholars.wustl.edu or call (866) 209-0691.     
  • Norwich University Summer Leadership Opportunities--Norwich University will be offering two summer programs to seniors, juniors, sophomores, and anyone already accepted to Norwich University.  The first camp will be a Drill Camp that will run from June 28, 2009-July 12, 2009 at a cost of $1,255.  The second camp offered is a Future Leader Camp; there will be two sessions of this camp, and the first session will run from June 28, 2009-July 11, 2009.  The second session will run from July 19, 2009-August 1, 2009.  Each of these sessions will cost $1,455.  The cost associated with each program will include the room and board, uniforms, and all activities.  Stop by the front office or visit www.norwich.edu/admissions/summerprograms for more information.
  • Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel--Applications for the 23rd Annual Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel are now being accepted for summer 2009.  The purpose of the Fellowships is to increase understanding and tolerance among the different Jewish denominations.  BYFI is a fully endowed fellowship available to all currrent juniors of the Jewish faith.  The Fellowship will take place from June 29, 2009-August 5, 2009.  If you are interested, please visit www.bronfman.org for all the necessary information.

  • University of Pennsylvania--The University of Pennsylvania will be holding the High School Chinese Academy from July 6, 2009-August 14, 2009.  The program will couple Penn's extensive experience with intellectual development programs for high school students and its excellence in Chinese language and culture taught by nationally known Penn professors.  Each student will be granted a $1,000 scholarship, which will be applied to the cost of tuition.  There will be a limited number of full scholarships available.  Visit www.ceas.sas.upenn.edu for more information about the program.
  • PA Governor's Schools of Excellence--Applications for the 2009 PA Governor's Schools of Excellence are now available at www.pde.state.pa.us.  Use the Keyword Schools of Excellence when applying.  Application deadlines fall in January and February.  The information line for the Governor's Schools is (570) 524-5244 and can be accessed weekdays from 8:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. except holidays.

  • Oxford Advanced Studies Program--Brasenose College at Oxford will be hosting its 2009 Advanced Studies Program again this summer for all seniors and juniors.  Visit www.oasp.ac.uk for more information.
  • Summer Institute for the Gifted--The Summer Institute for the Gifted will be taking place again this summer.  Grades 6-11 will be able to attend residential sessions at Amherst College, Bryn Mawr College, Emory College, UC Berkeley, UCLA, the University of Texas at Austin, and Vassar College.  Princeton University, along with the list of others, will be available for students in grades 7-11.  If you are interested, stop by the front office for more information.
  • Penn State Hazleton--Penn State Hazleton is looking for students with an interest in becoming a Medical Laboratory Technologist.  PSU Hazleton can offer students the opportunity to prepare for a career in Medical Laboratory Technology.  Qualified students can enroll in the two-year program which includes one year of "hands on" experience.  The employment rate for graduates of this program is 100% within three months of graduation.  There is currently a shortage of MLTs in Pennsylvania and it is estimated that the shortage will grow by 4,000-5,200 workers per year.  For more information, call (800) 279-3000.

Contests and Competitions

  • JFK Library Foundation--The JFK Library Foundation is sponsoring the 2009 Profile in Courage essay contest.  Each entry must be less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in "Profiles in Courage".  For a list of essay guidelines and other information, stop by the front office.  Each submition must be postmarked by January 10, 2009
  • Hazleton Jewish Community Council--The Hazleton Jewish Community Council is holding the 14th Annual Israel T and Mildred Klapper Memorial Holocaust Essay Contest.  There will be two categories available for entry.  One category for mid school students and one for high school students.  Each category must have an essay no longer than 300 words.  1st place is a $200 U.S. savings bond and 2nd place is a $100 U.S. savings bond.  The deadline is Thursday, February 12, 2009.  Send your essays to the following address: The Jewish Community Council Holocaust Essay Contest, 77 North Pine Street, Hazleton, PA 18201.
  • WVIA Essay Contest--WVIA announces its 12th Annual Making A Difference: Great Teachers essay contest.  Their goal is to showcase teachers who have made a difference in the lives of their students.  They are looking for essays of 500 words or less from high school seniors, highlighting a teacher who has had a significant effect on their academic and personal lives at any point during their school career.  A $500 scholarship will be awarded to each winning student.  The deadline is February 13, 2009 and all entries must be submitted as a Word attachment via e-mail.  The e-mail address is www.wvia.org.  Winners will be notified by phone or e-mail no later than Monday, February 23, 2009.  Good luck.
  • Johnson & Wales Chef of the Year Contest--J & W is sponsoring the National High School Chef of the Year Contest.  To enter, you must create an original dinner or dessert entree following contest guidelines and submit your creation to the judges.  Two grand prize winners will receive full tuition to Johnson & Wales and get to meet celebrity chef Tyler Florence.  Stop by the front office for the entry form and information.  The deadline is February 23, 2009.     
  • APA TOPSS Scholars Essay Competition--APA TOPSS is pleased to announce that they are holding their essay competition.  There will be three winners, each of whom will receive a $500 award.  You can stop by the front office for the topic and other information or visit their Website at www.apa.org/ed/topss/homepage.html.  The deadline for submissions is March 6, 2009.  Send your submissions, postmarked by the deadline date, to: TOPSS Scholar Competition, c/o Jewel Beamon, Education Directorate, American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, N.E., Washington, DC 20002-4242
