Morgan Palermo, a junior at MMI Preparatory School, Freeland, has been selected to participate in the National Rifle Association’s annual National Youth Education Summit (YES). YES is a seven-day all-expenses-paid educational experience in Washington, D.C., for outstanding high school sophomores and juniors. While attending the summit in the nation’s capital, Palermo will learn the significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights while developing an understanding of government and the importance of actively participating in it. Palermo was selected from numerous qualified applicants from across the country. She was required to complete an extensive application, which included the submission of school transcripts, an essay about the Second Amendment, her own personal statement and the submission of three personal recommendations. Palermo said she thought attending the summit would be a great experience. “I wanted to meet new people and to learn from others. I also wanted to hear different opinions to understand more how people think and really broaden my experiences,” she said. Palermo, daughter of Michael and Michelle Palermo, Drums, has been a consistent honor roll and President’s List candidate throughout prep school. At MMI, Palermo is a member of the student council and serves as a student mentor. She is also a member and team manager of the robotics club and is a member of the mock trial and debate teams and the school Interact club. Palermo has won first- and second-place awards in the regional and state Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competitions. Palermo is an MMI basketball team member and a member of the Valley Running Club, where she serves as a volunteer. She also takes part in several other school clubs and activities. In the community, Palermo has volunteered her time with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life since seventh grade. She also volunteers with the United Way and is a participant in the Hazleton Junior Leadership program and a member of the Serento Gardens student board. |
