The boys’ basketball team is arguably the most successful of the Preppers’ athletics’ programs.  In 1973, the squad won the PIAA Class C State Championship under Head Coach Walter Greshko.  En route to the state title, the Preppers also were the Division Champions and the Anthracite League Champions.  The program boasts 14 scorers who surpassed the 1000-point plateau, with the most recent one being Keith Brazzo (1987-1990).

In the two years since the MMI Wall of Fame began inducting nominees, one team and three individuals have been recognized for Athletic Excellence.  All of those recognized to date, played for the Preppers’ basketball program. In 2006, the Wall of Fame inducted the storied 1973 Varsity Boys Basketball Team as a whole, along with Dr. Keith Brazzo ’90 and Atty. Denis Brenan ’55.  An outstanding basketball player, Dr. Brazzo was twice named to the All-State Class AAA team and was recognized as the Standard-Speaker Player of the Year in 1990.  Atty. Brenan was co-captain of the team that won the Freeland Conference Championship in 1955 and was the top scorer in the region that year. The most recent inductee to the Wall of Fame, Jake Kislan ‘56 was a superior athlete for four years at MMI in both baseball and basketball.  His tenure on the basketball team included his selection as the region’s top basketball guard in his senior year.

Joe Flanagan is the current head coach of the varsity team.  Coach Flanagan serves as the Director of the Freeland YMCA and is in his third season as the Preppers’ leader.  Chris Flanagan, brother of Coach Flanagan, acts as the jayvee coach and as an assistant to the varsity program.  Last year’s team won the Benton Tip-off Tournament and was led by junior guard Tyler Breznitsky.  Breznitsky was named an All-Conference selection and led the Wyoming Valley Conference in scoring.
