MMI Preparatory School Head of School Mrs. Theresa Long is proud to announce the establishment of the Reverend Ralph E. Whitmer Endowed Scholarship, a permanent fund created through a generous gift from alumnus Mr. Robert A. Gallagher ’72, a retired attorney. The scholarship honors the memory and enduring influence of Reverend Whitmer, a beloved educator, mentor, and community leader whose impact on generations of MMI students extended far beyond the classroom.

The endowed scholarship will provide need-based financial assistance to students in grades 9 through 12, ensuring that deserving young people have access to the transformative educational opportunities that have defined MMI for nearly 150 years. When multiple students demonstrate equal financial need, academic achievement may be considered as a determining factor in the selection process, reflecting the donor’s commitment to both access and excellence.

For Mr. Gallagher, the scholarship is a deeply personal tribute to a teacher whose guidance helped shape his future. “Most teachers share knowledge, but a rare few inspire a lifetime of curiosity, integrity, and purpose,” said Gallagher. “Reverend Whitmer was that kind of teacher for me. He challenged us to think critically, encouraged us to engage with the world around us, and genuinely cared about his students as individuals. He personified the spirit of ecumenism. It is my hope that this scholarship will honor his legacy while opening the doors of an MMI education for students who will go on to make their own difference in the world and contribute to the greater good.”

Reverend Ralph E. Whitmer served on the MMI faculty in the Humanities from 1956-1961 and again from 1967-1979. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he served as the School’s librarian and advised activities including the Interact Club, Key Club, and Hi-Fi Music Club. Known for his enthusiasm for athletics, especially basketball, he was a familiar and encouraging presence throughout campus life.

Outside of MMI, Reverend Whitmer faithfully served as pastor of Freeland Bethel Baptist Church and the Welsh Congregational Church in Hazle Village. He was an active civic leader, including serving as President of the Freeland Rotary Club. His dedication to education, faith, and community service left a lasting impression on colleagues, students, and the greater Freeland community. Reverend Whitmer passed away in 1983.

Mr. Gallagher’s extraordinary generosity honors Reverend Whitmer’s legacy while creating opportunities for future generations of MMI students. This scholarship is a beautiful reminder that the lessons learned within our classrooms continue to shape lives long after graduation.”

Endowed scholarships provide permanent support for MMI students by preserving the principal of each gift while using annual investment earnings to fund financial aid. As a result, the Reverend Ralph E. Whitmer Endowed Scholarship will continue to benefit students for generations to come, ensuring that Reverend Whitmer’s commitment to education and Mr. Gallagher’s gratitude for his mentor remain lasting parts of the MMI story.
