MMI Preparatory School senior Gavyn Corchado has been selected as a Commended Scholar in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will present him with a letter of commendation to mark this achievement.
“We are very proud of Gavyn and this well-deserved recognition,” said Head of School Mrs. Theresa Long. “Being named a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student reflects his strong academic ability, dedication, and commitment to excellence. Gavyn has distinguished himself as a scholastically talented senior, and we are pleased to see his hard work recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition open to high school students across the United States. To enter the competition, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To be recognized, this year’s class needed to have at least a 210 Selection Index, which equates to around a total score of 1400.
Nationally, around 34,000 students were recognized as Commended Scholars for their exceptional academic promise. Out of a total of over 1.2 million junior PSAT test-takers, these students scored in the top 3%. While this signifies the end of their National Merit Scholarship journey, as they did not reach the state-specific cutoff to become a Semifinalist, Commended Scholars show a high level of academic achievement and may be candidates for Special Scholarships.
