Wall of Fame Class of 2012
Dr. Nicholas A. Martyak ’59 dedicated his life to children as a well-respected pediatrician in Hazleton until he passed away in 1998. He completed his pediatric internship, pediatric residency, and pediatric hematology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. For 27 years, Martyak was a staff member at Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center. He served as chief of pediatrics there and at Coaldale State Hospital. He was elected president and chief of staff at St. Joseph’s for 1983. Martyak was a clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine at Penn State University’s College of Medicine, as well as a Wilkes-Hahnneman preceptor and a King’s College preceptor for the physician assistant program. He also served as medical director of the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy and an emergency room physician at Hazleton General Hospital and Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center. Martyak was a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Luzerne County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Northeastern Pediatric Association of Pennsylvania. He was chairman of the Luzerne-Wyoming County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Advisory Board. All five of his children and two of his brothers also attended MMI.
