Four MMI Preparatory School students won awards from the 20th Annual Israel T. and Mildred Klapper Memorial Holocaust essay contest. Morgan Long, son of David and Theresa Long, Drums, and Zachary Young, son of Christian and Nicole Young, Freeland, both tied for first place in the middle school division of the competition and will receive $200. In the high school division, Joshua Narrow, son of Howard and Marie Narrow, Hazleton, won first place and will receive $200, and Luke Yamulla, son of Robert and Ann Yamulla, Sugarloaf, won second place and will receive $100.

Jennifer Novotney, MMI English teacher and faculty advisor for the competition, said, “I am so proud of all four of the essay contest winners. The Holocaust is a very difficult topic to write about and all of their essays capture the spirit of this terrible event’s memorial.”

The students will receive their awards on April 16 at 7:00 P.M. at the Agudas Israel Synagogue located at 77 North Pine Street, Hazleton. They will also read their prize-winning essays. The topic for the essay competition was, “In the Holocaust, the entire Jewish population was targeted for extermination. Could something like that happen again? What would be the first warning signs?” The contest was sponsored jointly by the Hazleton Jewish Community Council and the Greater Hazleton Ministerial Association.
