Mr. Joseph A. Varilla was the salutatorian of the Class of 1955 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lehigh University. Mr. Varilla began his stellar career in the communications field as a member of United Press International and as a reporter for the Hazleton Standard-Sentinel. In 1963, he joined Xerox Corporation where he continued working in various capacities for more than 40 years. Mr. Varilla was head of Corporate Communications and director of Global Communications for Xerox and excelled as a writer and editor despite suffering from multiple sclerosis. He was recognized for his courage in dealing with the disease by several media organizations including the New York Times.
