Three students from MMI Preparatory School have earned awards in the Scholastic Writing Awards’ Northeast Writing Region-at-Large competition.

The award winners are Zackary Heckrote, son of Brian Heckrote and Dawn DeMelfi-Heckrote, Lattimer; Victoria Kline, daughter of John and June Kline, Mountaintop; and Luke Yamulla, son of Robert and Ann Yamulla, Sugarloaf. Heckrote won two awards: Silver Key in poetry for “Of Little Faith” and honorable mention in flash fiction for “Red Landscape.” Kline won honorable mention in personal essay/memoir for “The Sea Adventure.” Yamulla won honorable mention in dramatic script for “Go Back.”

Jennifer Novotney is the faculty advisor. She said, “I am so proud of Zachary, Victoria, and Luke for their accomplishments in receiving scholastic writing awards this year. They have grown tremendously as writers and I can’t wait to see what they produce in the future.”

The awards are presented by The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Their mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarship.

Year after year, the scholastic awards program grows with increased participation from students, increasing scholarships and recognition opportunities.
