MMI Preparatory School art instructor Lisa Marie Ferry was selected to receive the 2017 Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA) Outstanding Non-Public Art Educator Award. The award recognizes exemplary contributions, achievements and service to art education at the state, regional and national levels. It is given on behalf of the PAEA Awards Committee and PAEA Board.
A nomination letter and two additional letters of recommendation were required for each award candidate. The award selection process took into account a candidate’s level of education; participation in National Art Education Association (NAEA) activities on the national, regional, state and local levels; their leadership roles, offices and/or honors in other professional associations; related experience with program development, publications, artistic production and/or exhibitions; and additional teaching or related experiences.
In the fall of 2016, Ferry earned the prestigious Master of Arts degree in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations from Moore College of Art and Design. It is the only degree of its kind in the country and has a very selective application process. Last October, she gave a presentation on her research topic at the Pennsylvania Art Education Association and Pennsylvania Independent School Association conferences. During the presentation, Ferry shared her knowledge and understanding of how to create art activities and an art journaling kit based on postmodern principles to help alleviate anxiety and stress symptoms. On August 17, Ferry will present “Turning Anxiety into Creativity” at the STR2E2AM Evidence-Based Practices Conference held at King’s College. Her hands-on workshop will focus on alleviating the anxiety and stress students encounter in the classroom. Ferry will present again at the Pennsylvania Art Education Association Conference in October where she will be leading a session entitled “Empower your Student’s Creative Side with Growth Mindset Strategies”.
Ferry taught photography and advanced photography at Misericordia University for three years. She has been a photographer for more than 20 years and traveled to Mexico on a full stipend for a photo ethnography assignment. Ferry has had her work shown at her own exhibitions and has had three pieces of artwork selected for the juried Northeastern Biennial Twenty Thirteen and Twenty Fifteen. She was also a published finalist for two consecutive years in Photographer’s Forum magazine. Additionally, Ferry has served as a facilitator and speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
