MMI posts highest aquatics score at Luzerne County Envirothon
MMI’s team of Jay Solgama, Joshua Kalada-Kania, William Bower, Samuel Sessock, and Sarah Moyer received the highest score in the Aquatics component and were third overall out of 34 teams at the 2015 Luzerne County Envirothon. Aquatics deals with species identification, water quality, ecosystems and ecology, watershed management, and invasive organisms.

MMI recognized 5 students in the seventh, ninth and eleventh grades as “Best of the Best” during a recent assembly.
MMI students place second in Cedar Crest Biology Olympics
MMI Preparatory School sophomore Anirban Chowdhury and junior William Bower both placed second in the Cedar Crest Biology Olympics. Chowdhury, the son of Bhaskar and Saumitri Chowdhury of Hazle Township, was second in Ecology. Bower, the son of Dr. Kathy Young of Sugarloaf and Philip Bower of Emmitsburg, Maryland, was the runner-up in Cell Biology.

MMI Preparatory School freshman trombone player Aaron Harman recently participated in the Pennsylvania Music Education Association’s (PMEA) District 9 Jazz Festival.
MMI students attain recognition in 2015 National Spanish Examinations
Several MMI Preparatory School world language students attained national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2015 National Spanish Examinations. MMI students earned a total of six silver and five bronze medals along with 11 honorable mentions from Spanish 1 through Spanish 4.

MMI finishes third overall at Luzerne County Envirothon
MMI Preparatory School finished third overall at the 2015 Luzerne County Envirothon. The Envirothon is an annual environmental competition for high school students. The Luzerne Conservation District coordinates and sponsors the Luzerne County Envirothon each spring. The event is for Luzerne County high school students in grades 9-12. It tests their knowledge of the environment with five 100-point tests: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and a Current Issue, which changes each year. This year’s current issue was Urban Forestry.
Anthropology class takes field trip to 36LU169
Students in Lisa Ferry’s Anthropology class took a field trip on April 26 to the Conrail Site (officially referred to as 36LU169) to join The Frances Dorrance Chapter (Chapter 11) of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology for an archeological dig.

Two MMI Preparatory School students recently placed in the top three in their age division at the 2015 Marywood University High School Math Contest. Sophomore Ani Chowdhury captured first place in the Level 1 division (grades 9-10) and classmate Ali Aijaz finished third.
MMI students win Holocaust essay contest
Four MMI Preparatory School students won awards from the 20th Annual Israel T. and Mildred Klapper Memorial Holocaust essay contest. Morgan Long, son of David and Theresa Long, Drums, and Zachary Young, son of Christian and Nicole Young, Freeland, both tied for first place in the middle school division of the competition and will receive $200. In the high school division, Joshua Narrow, son of Howard and Marie Narrow, Hazleton, won first place and will receive $200, and Luke Yamulla, son of Robert and Ann Yamulla, Sugarloaf, won second place and will receive $100.
