MMI Preparatory School purchased six Circuit Scribe drawing pens and additional refills with a $500 Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance grant received from Onvo. The Circuit Scribe conductive ink pen, which contains actual liquid silver, offers instructors an innovative way of teaching how electricity and electronics work and gives students an immersive, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experience.

Thirty-one of MMI Preparatory School’s 51 participants placed in the top five of their respective categories at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Regional competition, including nine individuals and two teams who captured first place, and 23 students will advance to the 2021 FBLA State Leadership Conference.

MMI Preparatory School sophomore Jillian McGeehin, the daughter of Larry and Amy McGeehin of Sugarloaf, won the School’s Poetry Out Loud competition and will represent MMI at the regional competition. Sophomore Annabel Dobash, the daughter of Gregory and Stacey Dobash of Mountaintop, was the runner-up. MMI English instructor Jennifer Novotney served as the faculty advisor.

MMI Preparatory School recently received a $5,000 contribution from Community Bank, N.A. through the Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program to go toward need-based scholarships at the school. MMI Director of Advancement Kim McNulty said, “On behalf of everyone at MMI Preparatory School, I’d like to thank Community Bank, N.A. for their generous contribution. Since 2005, MMI students have received nearly $3.8 million in scholarship support thanks to the contributions of many area companies. MMI Preparatory School seniors Darren Zheng and Louis DeAngelo were named as Semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. 

MMI Preparatory School will begin the 2020-2021 school year on September 8 at 8 a.m. with in-person instruction while simultaneously offering live-stream and recorded courses in a plan that was approved by the MMI Board of Directors. Faculty will return for the new school year on August 18.

MMI Preparatory School honored the Class of 2020 during its 128th commencement ceremony on Tuesday, July 7. Seniors received their diplomas from MMI Head of School Justin Kleinheider and Chairman of the 2019-2020 Board of Directors John H. Hersker ’76. The ceremony was held in the MMI Gymnasium and was available via a live stream on MMI’s website for anyone to watch. This year’s graduating class of 28 seniors were accepted at more than 79 percent of the colleges they applied to and amassed more than $7.6 million in merit scholarships and awards.

MMI senior baseball players Brandon Crockford, Carter Frask, Alexander Jordan, and Marcus Kassick were honored with personal visits and gifts to mark their contribution to the team despite the loss of the season due to COVID-19. Senior Christian Yamulla will be honored at a later date.
